During his reign, King Oliver Cromwell of England ordered the melting down of ancient swords for gold and metal. This relic is one of the few weapons known to have survived that terrible period. Originally, the Sword of Mercy belonged to Edward the Confessor, who ruled England from 1042 to 1066.
