Best Mexican Restaurants in San Diego

Mexican cuisine is primarily a fusion of indigenous Mesoamerican cooking with European, especially Spanish, elements added after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in the 16th century. The staples are native foods, such as corn, beans, avocados, tomatoes, and chili peppers, along with rice, which was brought by the Spanish. Europeans introduced a large number of other foods, the most important of which were meats from domesticated animals (beef, pork, chicken, goat, and sheep), dairy products (especially cheese), and various herbs and spices.

PUESTO

Before Puesto, we had all left San Diego to chase ambitions in other ventures. Though we found individual success in other places, it was tacos that brought us back together and back to California —Chef Luisteen’s tacos, to be exact. His passion for completely re –defining the taco brought us back to our hometown of San Diego to start a family business, the taco stand we’d never even dreamed of. Now we’re tacoteurs and have never looked back. Located near historic Seaport Village, Puesto at The Headquarters resides in the original San Diego Police Headquarters building between the USS Midway and the San Diego Convention Center. The large patios stagger in and out of towering steel doors, which open to original walls exposing layers of history. Internationally acclaimed designer Thomas Schoos has imagined the space as an industrial homage to the streets of Mexico City. Multiple modern murals from artist Chor Boogie lend award-winning San Diego tacos a vibrant backdrop.

TACO STAND

¡Hola, we’re The Taco Stand! We’re a family owned taquería inspired by the taco stands of Tijuana and our adventures along the Baja peninsula. With the majority of our time spent in San Diego, we needed an authentic taco stand experience to satisfy our cravings north of the border. With solid family recipes and a fridge stocked with Mexican Coca-Cola, we opened our first location in La Jolla in 2013. In 2016, we opened two more locations in Downtown San Diego & Encinitas. Our authentic taco stand experience features handmade corn tortillas, top grade meats and the freshest ingredients, used to make our guacamole and salsas from scratch daily. Besides amazing tacos and burritos, we also have a great selection of Mexican flavored popsicles, refreshments, imported beer and freshly prepared Rosarito-style churros.
